Denmark: Jutland Peninsula, Ribe and Jelling with R,S and L

Here is an update of the first of our travels to Denmark.  We met up on the Jutland Peninsula with friends from Calgary; Randi, Steve and their little one Lily.  They were there visiting Randi's parents.  We met up with them in Kolding, visited a castle and went to pick up our key to the summer house (kind of like a cottage but really a house near the beach) that they had rented for the five of us before meeting Randi's parents for dinner.  The next day it was off to the oldest town in Denmark; Ribe, to wander through a viking museum.  Some of the stuff that has been found and is still being uncovered in this town is amazing.  You have to remember this stuff is over a thousand years old!  They have a new dig beside the church which is uncovering still more Viking artifacts.  The next day we went off to Jelling to look at some Viking Runes (big stones with writing on them for those who do not know).  We timed that well as there was a Viking Camp re-enactment going on which we of course wandered through..  Steve and Dwayne decided beer and a sausage was a good idea.  I think if we had waited around in the camp for longer I would have liked to try the two pigs they were roasting.  There are two large burial mounds in Jelling, two famous Runes, an amazing Viking museum and a chart that shows that the current queen of Denmark is a direct descendent of the first King of Denmark whose name was Gorm.  Gorm and his son, Bluetooth were the creators of the two Runes.  We then finished the day with a trip to Legoland.  Yes Legoland.  This is Denmarks most popular tourist attraction.  There are models of every kind made of millions of peices of Lego.  I had to include the offshore drilling rig.  What you cannot see in the picture are the moving parts of most of these displays.  Around the offshore rig were two humpback whales (made of grey lego) that would surface and spit water.  Ah the Danish, they know how to have fun.  Now in Copenhagen to see the sites here.

  1. I howled when I say the drilling rig - so classic for you and Sparks!

Nice shot of R, L and S but was hoping for a closeup of Lily to see what the tyke looks like now.

Viking artifacts would be cool - we recently watched the cartoon How To Train Your Dragon with Zoe, which is about vikings, and it was hilarious.

Lift a pint for me somewhere; well who am I kidding, do it in many places which it looks like you are :-)
