Split, Brac and Hvar (yup sounds like I'm coughing!) Croatia

After a three hour layover in Frankfurt we got to Split Croatia without any issues.  We are on the Adriatic sea for those who don't know so we started our culinary delights with seafood, yum, yum.  We spent the next day touring the Diocletians palace.

This was built about 2000 years ago.  It was a retirement home for a Roman emperor, man it was good to be in charge back then.  It is quite an amazing structure which included a water system, sewage, gardens, spas etc.   You get the idea.  The next day off to the archaeological museum.  Wow, they had really, really old stuff  well before even the Romans looking for retirement gigs got here.  We again opted for seafood (though the ink that squirts out of squid when cutting it, is a bit disconcerting, its still very tasty!)and being in land locked Alberta, seafood and fish never get old.    I need to mention with a picture of course that the Croatian navy submarines look much like the Canadian subs at west Edmonton mall.  HA!

The next day our bike tour guide Milo showed up at the hotel.  We went for a ride to make sure they are ok which meant a hill climb in the center of Split for 20 km.

My bike was fine thanks.  We then went for another 5km ride along the waterfront where we found out our guide is one of the world champion  Picigen players.  What is Picigen you might ask, well its a Croatian national sport.  Kind of like handball on a team of five played in really shallow water in Speedos of course.  Our guide looks fine in a Speedo by the way, this is him in real life and in the picture he is pointing to!
We took a ferry over to Brac the next day where we cycled  about five hours with a 6km ride up a very long slow stupid hill.  At least at the top we had food (seafood of course)and wine.   Then a trip to a gallery where they make cool stuff out of rocks.  Wow, can you say geeky geologist  heaven?  Yup, you can.

This stone which the afore mentioned palace in Spilt is made of also is the stone that the White  House is built of, cool.  The next day a ferry over the island of Hvar where a light 28km ride was followed by a ten minute speedboat ride (can you say Yahoo boat?) over to one of the small islands in the archipelago for dinner and wine, yum fish again.  Today was a mere 13km hill followed  by a ten km downhill to Jelos for lunch followed by wine tasting to finish up the island of Hvar.
